I think that open-source software has a lot of advantages. For one thing, it's free (always a plus) and since you have access to the code, if the software isn't exactly what you want, and you have the know-how, you can modify it to fit your needs. It's a win-win in my opinion - but of course, you know that old saying about opinions... :)
Hi. I have used DotNetNuke quite a bit. It is an open-source Web-based portal software. My personal Web site is run on the DNN framework.
Open-source is great, if there is a well established community of programmers behind it that are able to update it and support it. However, if not, then most do not have the ability to fix issues that come up when using open source software.
I have used...for my project of converting powepoint to flash, an open source product that was free on the web. Moodle happened to be one of the open source solutions I put on my resource page. Al
